FAQ

FAQ

1. What is vegan silk?

Vegan silk is derived from yarns sourced from wood pulp, known as regenerated plant cellulose. Common sources include eucalyptus, beech, bamboo, pine, and banana stem. Chemically treated to create viscose yarns, this silk, sourced from trees, is 100% cruelty-free.

2. What is non-silk?

Non-silk includes microfibers sourced from petroleum byproducts like polyethylene terephthalate (PET), known as polyester, and fibers from coal, water, and air, known as nylon. Although 100% cruelty-free, these materials are not vegan.

3. What is ahimsa silk/peace silk?

Ahimsa silk, or peace silk, is extracted from the empty cocoon after the silk moth naturally emerges.

4. Is ahimsa silk/peace silk really cruelty-free?

While claimed to be cruelty-free, ahimsa silk involves controlled life cycles for silk moths, affecting their ability to fly. This practice is considered as cruel, if not more, than conventional silk.

5. Differences between vegan silk and non-silk?

Natural Source: Vegan silk is sourced naturally, while non-silk comprises microfibers that are not natural.

Biodegradability: Vegan silks are biodegradable, whereas non-silk may not biodegrade for the next 100 years.

Breathability: Vegan silk is highly breathable and skin-friendly, while non-silk is comparatively less breathable.

Cost: Vegan silk is comparatively expensive than non-silk but cheaper than pure silk (cocoon silk).

Climate Suitability: Vegan silk is suitable for all climates, while non-silk may not be suitable for all climates.

Texture: Vegan silk is soft, drapey, and naturally falling, while non-silk can be designed and structured.

Sustainability: Organically processed vegan silk in textiles is highly sustainable, unlike non-silk.

Maintenance: Non-silk is easy to maintain, while vegan silk requires a little extra care.

6. Which silk and fabrics are cruelty-based and cruelty-free-based?

Cruel-Based: Fabrics made from silk worms (pure silk, ahimsa silk), wool, and leather.

Cruelty-Free-Based: Fabrics made from vegan silk, non-silk (microfibers), cotton, linen, jute, hemp.
